Golden-cheeked gibbons

Dao Tien, working with the Vietnamese Forestry Protection Department, confiscates illegally kept gibbons that have been hunted from the wild.  Suitable individuals are rehabilitated for release back to the wild.

All the gibbons go through the process of rehabilitation starting with health checks and non-invasive DNA sampling from hair.  Following a period of quarantine they are socialised with their own kind, and finally on to tree training in a semi-forested enclosure.  Successful candidates when ready are released into continuous forest where they are monitored for up to one year, as they once again live wild lives.  Individuals that fail at any stage will be found a home in a non-release sanctuary, with a high standard of care.

If you would like to find out more detail about individuals and follow their progress as we rebuild their lives, please see below. To support the costs of rehabilitation SPONSORSHIPS are available.

Da's background:  Rescued with Lat in 2008, after living many years at a restaurant tourist shop. Estimated to have been born in 2002. When confiscated, the restaurant owner was fined 22,000,000 VND for illegally keeping endangered primates. Da weighed half his expected weight.
Character:  A soft playful gibbon who allows his female to totally dominate him.
Future:  Da was a natural in the trees and the whole family was released into continuous forest in August 2011.

Lat's background:  Rescued with Da in 2008.  Estimated born in 2002. It is believed Lat had a baby while illegally kept at the tourist restaurant, which died through stress after the first few days.
Character:  Lat is a determined gibbon that wants things to work, to the extent that when her mate was underweight and unable to sing well, she would sing for him.  She is very loving (when not around food) and gave birth to male infant (Ngoan) in 2010, who she is an excellent mother to.
Future:  The whole family were released in August 2011 and will be monitored post-release into continuous forest for one year to make sure they are adapting well to their new freedom.

Future: On track for full release

Lucy's background: Rescued in June 2009, having been kept as a pet in a rich Westerner's house in Ho Chi, Minh City. She was kept with no water, mainly only banana to eat and found to be carrying many gastro-intestinal parasites.

Future: On track for release

Teo's background: Teo (meaning "not so thin") was rescued as a pet along with Uh, from Bien Hoa City near Ho Chi Minh City. Estimated born in 2003. He has a twisted rib cage through rickets (a result of vitamin D deficiency from being indoors all the time), resulting in the appearance of a hunchback.
Character: He has a beautiful voice and through determination has learnt how to swing, stretching his very long body for the first time. It took him around 3 months to swing.
Future: Veterinarians gave him a clean bill of health, so it's just up to him to gain fitness to travel normally in the trees.
